Experienced Tuscaloosa Adoption Attorney Allen W. May, Jr.

I Handle Contested Adoptions

A contested adoptions is when one or both of the child's biological parents object to an adoption

For example, sometimes a biological father has not been involved in his child's life. When the step-father expresses interest in adopting the child, the biological father does not want to give up his rights.

In a contested adoption process, the court first determines whether the objecting parent's parental rights should be terminated. If that happens, the court can approve the adoption in the same court order.

If you suspect that your adoption may be opposed by one of the child's parents, contact me for a free consultation.

At my practice, I work with adoptive parents, relatives and step-parents during the adoption process, making sure that the legal complexities are handled properly so they don't interfere with your excitement.

Caring, Thorough Adoption Representation

At my law office, I handle three main types of adoption for clients throughout the greater Tuscaloosa area and surrounding counties:

  • Step-Parent Adoption: Step-parent/step-child adoptions typically take place when one parent's new spouse wants to make his or her parenting relationship permanent. In many cases, the other parent is willing to voluntarily give up parental rights and obligations to the step-parent. The step-parent takes over all legal responsibility for the child and the other parent is no longer obligated to pay child support.

  • Relative Adoption: Relative adoptions occur when the parents of a child are not fit to raise their children. The parents may agree, or a court may have found the parents unfit.

In cases where the father is unknown, there may be additional legal difficulties. The law requires a good faith effort to find out his identity, notify him, and give him the opportunity to raise the child himself.

  • Baby Adoptions/Domestic Adoptions: If you are working with an adoption agency and have found a child to adopt, I can help by helping you through the legal process. I help people adopt infants, foster children and older children.

Make sure that your adoption is handled correctly by an experienced adoption lawyer. I have the legal knowledge and the care to protect your best interests and the interests of the children involved. Contact me by e-mail or call (205) 349-5004 for a free initial consultation.
